Thank you for asking such interesting, intelligent questions! It was really fun to do this. Sorry I took so long; but I wanted to honor you all by giving as thoughtful an answer as all your questions were.

Thanks SO much for this opportunity!
I'm curious about whether Clare had any reservations about returning for a second season, given the uncertainty of the show in Season 1 with a cancellation and then reinstatement...

No reservations whatsoever. I was thrilled that the show had a second chance, made history and that I got to come to the party! There are no guarantees in this business anyway. That's just what we live with.

P.S. Love the name, Clare...it is my granddaughter's name!

YAY! Clare.
I like to think of myself as more the Mary type in that I would be the one hosting the place where everyone comes for meetings and brainstorming and such. Did you like how Mary was vital in that way, or would you have preferred to be out shootin' guns with the boys a la Emily?

Like you I personally am the hostess type. Though on the show there were times when I thought it would be fun to be shootin guns with boys. But at the end of the day, Mary survived partially cause she was where it was safe.

And partially cause she's a survivor. She's also a good liar. I loved the idea of her being there, smack dab in the middle of town, officially registered with J&R, all the while doing the underground business right under their noses!

The thing about this show is that the writers gave everyone something very specific to do. Everyone's part was vital to the story. I think they had some fun ideas of where to go with the whole underground supply line story once the war was full on and the town would be getting choked again. Who knows, maybe we'll find out someday ...

My question for her: Outside of playing your character on Jericho, what's one of the things you like best about the show?

I like the story. I like that it deals with real world problems without hitting you over the head with issues. The writers made it look easy, they just got you involved...but trust me, it is not easy to write these scripts. I read so many bad ones. That they can bring a series to life that deals with the realities and repercussions of a shadow government and have it broadcast on network television is amazing to me. That they haven't gotten assassinated by Dick Cheney is downright astonishing.

It's nice to hear someone during an interview, but it's different when you know the questions being answered are your own. It's also great to know that a wonderful actress like Clare Carey is taking time out of her schedule to answer our questions. So kind of her.

Now....for Clare Carey....THANK YOU!!!!!

1. Mary seemed to go through a lot of emotional experiences from being criticized by Eric's family, to the confrontation with Gail, to Eric leaving town for New Bern. What was the hardest scene for you emotionally and why?

:pnut: From jjb_md
Clare... how difficult was it playing the role of Mary Bailey, when it seemed like she was a home wrecker? Did it get easier as time went on? What attracted you to the role?

:pnut: From dbalcer1
She is so awesome.

I wonder if she found it hard to portray someone who was sleeping with another women's husband. I felt sympathetic to Mary and usually I don't so she did an awesome job.

I grouped these together cause they seem to be in the same area topic wise.

Pardon me if this gets actory - but basically, I didn't worry about anyone judging Mary, or if it was wrong, what she and Eric were doing. You can't play someone if you're busy having an opinion about them. The idea is to get into the shoes and into the heart, mind and point of view of that person. So my point of view was that I loved him. I loved him more than anyone or thing I had ever loved. He was deeply unhappy in his marriage, and had spent all his life being the good guy, pleasing everyone, and never himself.(Kenny, if you see this, please correct me if I'm wrong!) So when he and I got together, we both got to have an experience we never had before. It it was worth the trouble because it was real, it was authentic. And don't we all want to find that person with whom you can be your most true self with? That's what Mary thought about, even though she knew it was wrong. Love trumps all.

All the scenes were hard, in the way that in addition to the scene you are playing, you also always had to keep in mind the world and how it has changed; the depth of the tragedy and the entire thing collapsed around you.

The scene where the guys go off to New Bern was so heavy; April and the baby had just died, and we're sending these guys away under a strange cloud, Eric can't even look at me, it was intense. Usually there's lots of joking and chatter on the set; that day there was little. We were all just in it.

The scene I liked the least was when I confronted him in the bar, early on in the series about what he was doing. He had been laying low, not communicating with me. I hated having to ask if he was coming back. As a woman I would have too much pride to do that in real life. But Mary is more scrappy than me. And more direct. And actually it took courage to ask. But he was everything to her, like I said, so with out him she might've given up, become cold and resigned. Who knows.

It got better, not easier, because the writers gave me so much to do. And I got to grow - like after Eric left for New Bern, I had to love him with the uncertainty. The bottom dropped out for me. I had to set him free. I decided that it would make her stronger. She stopped worrying and just stayed in the moment, and became a person on whom people could rely.

2. When Jericho comes back for a third season...will you be on board to play Mary Bailey again?

Hell yeah

3. Was there ever a time when you wish they would have done a little more with your character? If so, when and why?

Well of course! More make out scenes with Kenny Mitchell! :)
Seriously, there is a saying you might have heard; there are no small parts, just small actors.

4. What is your favorite TV show, other than Jericho?

West Wing is probably my favorite. My husband got me into the X-Files.

5. What is your favorite episode of Jericho?

Impossible to answer.

6. Has Jericho changed the way you see the world today? Have you done anything different since being on Jericho to prepare for disasters?

I can't say I have (prepared) but what I do is campaign for Barack Obama. Hope is not just a slogan. We have been driven to the ground by the politics of fear, and governed by suspicion and hatred. I firmly believe that all the events of Jericho could take place if we continue down this path, or if our leaders are allowed to do whatever they want with absolute impunity. The world needs us to stand tall and set a new standard. We will never be able to root out the bad seeds if we are all crouching down in fear.

I love Clare's acting!
My question is: Clare, what do you normally do to prepare for a role? Do you have a favorite process you use?

It's a mish mash of everything I've learned, but mostly it's just; read the script. Imagine the circumstances. Read the script again. Fill out more details. Daydream and imagine until you are remembering things that happened to the character in 6th grade. Imagine scenes you will never play, what she would say if, and fantasize about all she wants and longs for. Sometimes I write, like a journal. Stuff just comes. Sometimes shoes or objects can be informative. Sometimes I would sit in the empty bar and take it all in, and just being there I'd come up with more stuff. The more I imagine it the more real it is to me, the more real it is to me the more real it is to you, the audience.

There's a lot that's instinct and some that is craft - delivery of lines is more craft. The art of tossing off dialogue like it's nothing. Filling in the blanks and knowing the things you don't say - so that rehearsed speech sounds like words you chose right at that moment. That takes practice. I am always practicing.

Clare works very hard at her craft and it shows in her presence during the scenes she's in.

Thanks!

Clare, thank you for agreeing to do this.

I think I would like to ask how you feel about our fandom, and the difference in having so much direct contact with the fans? I know other cast and crew have commented that this is pretty unprecedented and that they have enjoyed having the quick feedback.

Are you kidding? I LOVE YOU GUYS! I have never had the opportunity to be in a show that struck such a chord, other than Coach, maybe, but that was different. You all are inspiring to me in that you fight for what you believe in.

And one more question, which of the veteran actors you have worked with on Jericho do you feel has had the most affect on your role and how you played it?

I loved working with every single actor. The whole cast was awesome, in that they were totally prepared, committed and present for everything. And so talented. Truly, to a person. They all affected me. The tone of the show was what it was because the writers gave us rich things to play and the actors all rose to the occasion.

I might add though, that they gave Mac some great speeches, which only a guy like him could deliver. You may recall the one in "Why We Fight" (I think that's the title) - where at the end of the episode they are handing out guns on Main Street, and he gets up on a truck bed and quotes John Adams - his voice, his delivery, his sincerity, his gravitas - I saw him do at least 20 takes...and I cried every time. Amazing.

Welcome to RFJ by the way. We would love for you to stay.

Thank you! Jericho forever!

Oh! How exciting!
I did not like Mary Bailey much in the beginning (and I don't think I'm alone), but I must say Mary did grow on me and really seemed to become much, much more than just her initial action (being "the other woman"). My question is this: Was this hard to play knowing how the viewers would initially react? Did Mary get any "hate mail" over this?

It's funny - in life I am really interested in having everyone like me. But I never think of that when playing a character. I actually think sometimes its more fun to play someone less likeable. Anyway I never really thought about how the viewers would react - or maybe I was hoping they would be into a scandalous, hot love story in the middle of the apocalypse! :) Seriously I was a little surprised that there were so many opinions about it. A far as hate mail, no - the only thing was once I did a little web investigating and I found a post that said "I don't like her" - at first I took it personally and I was so bummed, but then I realized they were talking about Mary. So they didn't like what she did. Well, really that's fine with me - good drama = people making mistakes. Imagine stories without affairs and betrayals. Go ahead and try. Try to think of one good story without 'em. Got one? Anyone? See what I'm talking about?

I just wanted to add that you did a brilliant job of Mary and I hope to see more of you in the future! Thanks for taking the time to answer a few questions from us Rangers!

Thanks to you, Rangers!

In the episode "The Day Before" you had a bet with Stanley on a baseball game. Do you follow baseball or any other sports in real life?

I was a Dodger fan way back when Steve Garvey was the man. Ron Cey, Davey Lopoes, Fernando Valenzuela. I'm goin' way back here. They won the series, if I remember correctly. Then they all got traded and Steve Garvey showed up in a Padres uniform. It damn near broke my heart.

More recently I was obsessed with the Lakers. I watched them a lot in the Shaq/Kobe/Phil era. I guess I should tune in this year, eh? Apparently they're pretty hot!

Any new projects in the works or that you just wrapped?

Look out for a movie on Sci Fi called "Flubirds" - I don't know when it airs but it will be soon - it's a scary movie about monster birds infected by the avian flu virus. Can you even believe that? It actually may not be as silly as it sounds. I play a doctor, which was fun. I got to be the professional, just the facts girl. And here's some fun Jericho trivia; my costar in Flubirds was Lance Guest, who did an awesome turn as a reporter in Ep 2, season 2.

Remember the guy Jake was trying to get to do an expose on the whole thing... guess what that Ep was called? Anyone? That's right; "Condor". Now when you watch the scary movie, Lance has a line in which he uses the word condor - if you catch it and it makes you laugh, think of me.

I'm also in a the pilot for a new show called "Cleaner" - Benjamin Bratt stars as a guy who helps people clean up their lives using very unorthodox methods. I play the mother of a meth head, deep in denial. I think the show might be pretty good, you should check it out. July, I believe, on AMC.

My question for Claire is as follows:
In the scene where Gail confronts Mary in the bar, how intimidating was it to face off with veteran actress Pamela Reed in this shot? The acting in this scene is probably some of the best of the series, but it is also some of the most intense interplay between two characters.

Yeah, this is the stuff us actors live for. That scene was so fun to do - exhausting, intense, but hey that's my idea of fun. Intimidating? No. I mean, Mary certainly was intimidated but she sure as hell was trying not to let it show.

For me, Clare, it was an honor and a privilege. The scene was so memorable I think because we both had a strong point of view. You could tell it was gonna be great even at the table read. Again, I sound like a broken record but I swear it all comes back to the writing. They gave us a beautiful piece of music. And the director, Helen Shaver, let us play it many times and many ways before we found the exact right note.

What I discovered in doing it was that Mary had a certain kind of courage. In addition to the whole story in the scene, what I didn't get to say was that I never made up with my mom. Eventually my dad did, when she got cancer, he even took care of her at the end; he had never stopped loving her. I was finally on my way to see her but didn't make it before she died. So here's this potential mother figure for me telling me she will never accept me - and in the face of that kind of rejection and pain, Mary stood up pretty tall. Faced it. With a shot of moonshine, sure, but can you blame her?

What attracted you to the role of Mary Bailey?

You have to understand that us blue collar actors - us folks who audition for most every part we get - take the parts we get. I just did a thing on a pilot that may not ever see the light of day - I made the best of it - but hey it was a job. So I took it. What attracted me to the part of Mary was that they gave it to me. They said come to the party. So I did. But most jobs do not turn out like this; a rich, rewarding, interesting lovefest!

And by the way I got the job when my son was just 5 weeks old. I will always love these guys for hiring a woman with all that baby weight!

How much of Clare Carey is in Mary Bailey?

Actually, even though my grandmothers were both named Mary, and my folks are from the Midwest, and I wear blue jeans and T-shirts most every day, not much of me is Mary Bailey. As it turns out, she has more restraint than I do, a different kind of courage, and knows a lot more about moonshine and martinis.

What we have in common is that we love deeply, care about others, and we don't mind breaking the rules. Wait, maybe she is like me! Hell I don't know. The fun part about playing in a series is that it all blends together and you begin to trust the process. And like life, you don't know what's gonna happen next.

I did not get to work with Lennie James near enough. But we will, someday.

I can't think of a way to make this a question, so I'll just give my comment and you can pass it along if you want and maybe she'll elaborate.

I thought her character probably made the biggest leap between season 1 and 2. It was almost a complete role reversal between her and Emily. Emily was kind of the bad girl in se. 1, always in the middle of the action and when se. 2 came around, she basically just became Jake's girlfriend.

Mary on the other hand went from being the "other woman" in se. 1 to being the go-to girl in Se. 2 when it came to helping things get done in Jericho. Working the soldiers for info, finding ways to avoid check points, getting supplies past those check points, etc.

I'm answering the previous question here too;

I love the way Mary evolved from the beginning to the end. The scenes that were cut out of the pilot Mary was needy; she comes to town hall to find Eric and he blows her off. Luckily they went another way with the whole story line.

What I love about her journey was that she was someone who never thought much about the big picture - certainly never paid attention to politics or anything like that (another big difference between me and her, btw) and so the circumstances actually defined her character. Fight or flight, right? Well Mary realized she was one to stand and fight. And if the bombs had never gone off maybe she never would have known that about herself. She also became so much more calm and compassionate. I began to have this feeling about her that she was made of earth.

I loved that the role evolved from someone's girlfriend into a more intrinsic part of the group. I like that our little drama became unimportant and that people accepted Mary and Eric as a couple. We all had much bigger fish to fry. I think in season three the writers would come up with more ways for our little gang to become this band of freedom fighters. Everyone would play their different role, and probably it would serve to have Mary stay in the Tavern, appearing neutral but able to spy, to recruit deserting soldiers, and - this is not confirmed but I have heard that there is a tunnel that goes from Bailey's to City Hall, and then to an underground bunker. It was rumored to have been there from the old prohibition days. I'm thinking there might eventually be some hard core fighting right in town and that tunnel and the tavern will allow the rebels(that's us) to save the day. There was also some talk of turning bailey's into a brothel, but I guess it depends on what network picks it up!! :)

Thanks to Clare for answering our questions, and thank you for bringing Mary Bailey to life! What do you find more challenging: doing drama or comedy?

Every piece has its challenges. With drama you have to draw a fine line that has high stakes but stops short of melodrama. And with comedy you have to play the reality but in outrageous ways. It's like music, you have to know the tempo and tone of what you are doing, yet be free within those parameters.

I can't say which I like better, I feel lucky that I get to do both.

I think Clare is awesome. She's very easy on the eyes too! She brought a lot to Jericho even if Mary wasn't always at the forefront, and quite honestly in the beginning, she and Gerald McRaney were part of why I watched. I liked both of them from their other TV series and they gave Jericho credibility for me.

So my question...
I've noticed Clare is cast in bad girl/risque parts a lot in both her guest starring roles, and in film. This is very different from the role she was best known for previously (Kelly Fox). I wonder if the roles she's chosen are at all a reaction to playing Kelly for so long, or if she just enjoys those type of parts. She is quite stunning, and definitely pulls them off, just wondering if Kelly is a factor.

Hey Rubber Poultry what's up!? I guess you didn't catch me as a nun on Monk. Or as a cop's pregnant wife in 44 Minutes? Or as a religious fanatic attempting to redeem myself on Without a Trace? :)

Like I said, I take a job cause I get a job. I like the idea of being able to play the whole spectrum of humanity. In me is the nun and the bad girl. Just like you. Just please, for our sake, keep her inside. :)

I would like to ask her, as a member of the cast is she willing to return to Jericho if it gets picked up, or is she moving on with her career?

I will say it again; if they ask me to come, I would say absolutely.

If not returning, does she want the character to be killed off or just "away" (cameo?)

If not returning, I would want her to die in a blaze of glory. Do some really heroic thing. Sacrifice myself to save Eric, or Jericho.

hello Clare -
The Jericho cast has been great to donate items for ebay sales to help raise money for our SEASON 3 campaign. Thank you for your contributions - the shirts you signed were awesome. Could you maybe get some items signed by ALL the main characters? Do you have any idea what such items would sell for on ebay?!?!? They would fund a LOT of publicity for JERICHO!!! just an idea....

It's a good one. If there's any momentum with the sale we could probably get it done. Stay tuned.

PS - you're one of my favorite Jericho characters!

Looks like there are a bunch of good ones being asked at both forums already. I'm finding that some of my questions have already been asked for me. :p

1. One of the highlights in Mary Bailey's story throughout Season 1 was the talk between her and Gail. Personally I found it hard to care for either Eric or Mary before that episode but it felt so honest and heartfelt that it alone was enough for me to find Eric and Mary's relationship believable (even if I still don't like it). Was it a difficult scene to do and what other moments in Mary's storyline from the past two seasons were memorable?

I mostly answered this already but I will add that I loved the scene in season two where I work that soldier at the bar, there was a scene that was cut (it's in the DVD) where Eric finally leaves April and comes to me, I loved my scenes with Mac working on the still, I had a scene with Jake early in season one that was a quiet little scene but it was cool, and I liked the day before stuff - I could go on and on. Such fun, truly, we were so blessed to get to do this show.

2. The insiders commentary noted how every major character seemed to find their niche in the new stage of Jericho's survival (Dale's stealing, Jake's sheriff, Heather's working with New Bern) and Mary's role really seemed to fit her. What are your thoughts on Mary's position in Season 2 as opposed to Season 1?

Already answered this one

3. What aspect of Mary Bailey's character can you most identify with?

The rebel spirit, her true blue loyalty, her passion

4. Who or what had the biggest influence on your portrayal of Mary Bailey?

I really have no idea - it all stems from the writing, then you add the costumes (I wore the same pair of jeans and boots the entire time) and the other actors, and that magical thing that you can't explain...

5. Due to her job, most of Mary's scenes take place in the bar. In the first season it served as the hub for town interaction and was where they were trying to figure out news from the outside world, and in the second season it is where they are making all their plans. For that reason it has been one of the most important areas in Jericho along with City Hall, what are your thoughts concerning the setting and how it contributes to the overall story of Jericho?

I sort of already answered this one, but I can elaborate; Bailey's is the soul of Jericho.

It transformed along with the rest of us; and it changed from being the place where you could kick back with your friends to a place where you could survive with your friends. It became sacred ground, a safe haven, a hub of solid earth - in the ever changing landscape of what was left of our country, Bailey's was the one thing you could count on.

When I think back to all the scenes we shot there, my memory does a trick on me; it seems like I am remembering something real. I think that is because it was designed, decorated and lit so beautifully. It was brought to life by not just the stars but also the background actors. It became a place that existed, for real. I will never forget the scenes where the refugees first came in; they were all so into it, they looked so haunted and haggard - this is partially great costumes and makeup- and partially due to the way that every artist working on that show contributed to making that place a place. And as I said, I think that as time goes on, it will become a critical strategic point of resistance.

6. What are your thoughts/opinions on the Eric-April-Mary affair from the first season? I can't say that I liked the story, or Mary Bailey's position in it... but it played a huge role in Eric's character. Mary's character is probably one of the most hated characters for this specific storyline; is there another character on Jericho you would have preferred to portray or an aspect of her character you'd like to see at some point?

The wonderful producers of the show told me that when they saw my tape, they said, "there's Mary Bailey" - so there is no other role I should've or could've played. In retrospect I think I am maybe most proud of the fact that I was judged for what I did, but then gained respect for who I became. To overcome prejudice just by showing strength of character - what a great thing to have been a part of.

I would like to say that working with Kenneth Mitchell was a joy and I think he is a great actor. I think he had a tricky role, and he always brought so much strength and complexity to it. Eric cared a great deal about his family, and did not take his decisions lightly. I think ultimately it brought him and Jake together - among other things, of course, but having Eric go through his dark time, dealing with his guilt, helped him to become closer to Jake, and perhaps become a stronger hero.

7. The Internet communities have seen many articles and debates concerning Jericho, and multiple movements to save Jericho and protest outdated ratings have been based across many Jericho forums and websites. Do you visit the online Jericho communities often? What are your thoughts on the strong presence of "new media" activity from Jericho's fans?

I think it's awesome. I love "new media" and you guys are a perfect example of its power and reach and cohesiveness. The nuts campaign was genius, and I am extremely proud to be even a small part of it. I do not visit the chat rooms often, but that's more a factor of my young children and husband than anything else. I am going to get a website up, and am hoping to contribute to the Baileys my space page, but please be patient with me.

8. What do you think are the most important lessons today's audience can draw from Jericho's story in the last couple seasons?

Take nothing for granted! There are evil people out there who are relying on you being asleep. Jennings and Rall = Halliburton, Ravenwood= Blackwater.

Get involved, take our country back. You have the power. Stay informed, make our leaders accountable. We are the change, people. It's in our hands.

9. Jericho shows the events from a small town's perspective as they seem to get mixed up in events worse than they could have imagined. Have you ever lived in a small town community and if so how do you think it relates to Jericho. What is your favorite aspect of the town of Jericho?

I grew up in Santa Barbara, which was a small town then. What I loved about the small townness of Jericho was that its people weren't small minded. They fought to maintain their humanity and their decency as the world around them became more and more barbaric. I think that's the challenge we all face even now. How to maintain decency, compassion and civility even as we become more numb an cynical as a nation. What a different world this would be if we all treated each other with kindness and respect. Just think; what would Johnston Green do?

First I want to thank you again for answering our questions!

You are so welcome.

Everyone has already asked such great questions. I just wanted to let you know how much I enjoyed your character. I think you brought a depth to Mary Bailey that made her noticeable in a sea of faces. And I loved how you put in that feisty quality to her. I could totally see her running the freedom fighters from her bar - most excellent. Because of you, Mary was believable in everything she sought to do - from meeting with Gail, to talking to Johnston while fixing the still, to stacking wood in the back of a truck and on to planning things for the Rangers - you were just awesome!!

Muchas Gracias. :)

Do you have any current or future projects that you are excited about?

see above

Is there anything you'd like to say to the fans or mention that we have not asked about?

No I think that covers it for now. Thanks!

Thanks Maybei for putting all of these interviews together to keep people excited and plugged in to our fandom.

To Clare (if you're reading this)....

Thanks for taking the time to give us such great and thorough answers. I hope my question question didn't give you the impression that I think you're at all one dimensional as an actor. Every role I've ever seen you portray has been executed with skill and believability. Your characters have always seemed real to me regardless of being "bad" or "good". And unfortunately I didn't see the nun or the pregnant wife. I'm sure they were great.

I hope we can get you back in those boots and jeans and running the bar in Bailey's again.

You're the best Clare!

Loved reading these answers!

Its always great to hear from the cast and I loved getting the opportunity to ask some of these questions. :smiling

Well, really that's fine with me - good drama = people making mistakes. Imagine stories without affairs and betrayals. Go ahead and try. Try to think of one good story without 'em. Got one? Anyone? See what I'm talking about?

Hmm, let me think... Tom Sawyer? Oh wait... I forgot about the Tom-Becky-Amy thing... :frog:

But I agree, you can't always have a character that is perfectly justified, it allows for more depth if he has shortcomings and doesn't always make the right decisions. There is always a chance the person will handle a situation in a different way at any given moment because he wants to improve on it or something... human beings are unpredictable and outside a couple exceptions always have some flaws or make some wrong decisions. Its not only necessary to good drama but to character development that people make mistakes.

Also great to hear an interesting bit of additional story to the Mary versus Gail confrontation.

Thank you Clare and of course Maybei for doing this.
Its great to read your thoughts about the series! Have to say my favorite scene's are the ones you did with Johnston with the still, when he was just getting to know you. Priceless acting! He had this pre-conception of you (as many of us did) and found someone totally different and I think he liked your spunk...maybe it reminded him of his wife LOL!
Hope to see you back on Jericho SOON!

:thanks: :cheer:
and
just because I have to have the Enterprise in here somewhere :strek:
