The average American consumes approximately 30 lbs of cheese a year.

But that only gets the USA ranked 14th in "moldy milk" consumption.

The top slot goes to - Greece, where the average Greek consumes approximately 55 lbs of cheese a year.
WOW! No lactose problems there obviously.

Editorial note: I do not think I'm an average American in this aspect. I eat cheese in some form almost every day and usually have a wedge of something in the fridge for snacking or a light dinner.

I love cheese, especially the harder kinds. Well, even the softer cheeses, and the smelly ones and the not so smelly ones and the yellow ones and the white holey ones and....

I absolutely LOVE cheese. There are several types of cheese in my fridge at any given time, some for eating, some for cooking with.

Just some of my favorites:
  • Swiss: Jarlsberg
  • Blue: I don't know the dairy - but its this incredible delicate smooth blue from Oregon that a local cheese shop carries
  • Crumbly: Stilton with mango
  • Goat: Gjetost
  • Munching on cheese: Mimolette, Parmigiano Reggiano or Aurrichio Provolone
  • Grilled Cheese Sandwich: Kraft Yellow 2% Milk American Singles
  • Melty cheese: Fresh Buffalo Mozzarella
  • Chedder: Vermont Sharp Chedder or this Garlic Chedder made by this tiny dairy in western MA

I would die without cheese (obviously not, but that's how much I love cheese), God forbid I ever become lactose intolerant...

My Mom became a vegan after she realized that milk products were causing her joints to lock up (it wasn't the early on-set arthritis that the doctors diagnosed). I really really hope that this doesn't happen to me, because every day there is either cheese or ice cream in my mouth.

Schumi you are my cheese twin!!! These are exactly my favorite cheeses, except I also really love Manchego cheese. The only other minor differences is that I have to have Tomatoes/Vinegar/Oil with my Fresh Mozzarella and I like smoked Provolone instead of regular. There is a amazing restaurant with a huge cheese menu in Ft. Lauderdale called Johnny V Las Olas. It's as long as a wine list with pages and pages of cheeses from around the world. The cheese plate is mix and match and it's huge. It comes with fruit, lightly candied walnuts (or pecans? can't remember) and bread. You can have it between 2 people as an appetizer plate or meal itself!

Manchego ROCKS!!!!

I have that all the time too.

And yes - nothing beats fresh mozzarella with tomatoes, basil and a little drizzle of good olive oil.

Movie quote that is appropo...

Some cultures are defined by their relationship to cheese.
- Benny and Joon (awesome movie with Johnny Depp, Mary Stuart Masterson, and Aiden Quinn if you've never seen it)

If we're gonna throw out cheese quotes from movies, I will contribute mine. From one of my favorite romantic comedies, French Kiss, starring Meg Ryan and Kevin Kline:

Quote:
Kate: Did you know there are 452 official kinds of cheese in this country [France], isn't that amazing? To find 452 ways to classify what is essentially a bacterial process? Don't you think that's amazing?

Luc: You would prefer one kind of cheese? One cheeseburger to put it on? One restaurant to eat it in?

Kate: I'm saying I *like* the cheese. God.

Ok, while we're on movie quotes with cheese, hows this one?

"Do you know what they call a Quarter Pounder with cheese in France?... Royale with cheese."
Vincent from Pulp Fiction.

By the way, I haven't had gjetost cheese since I was in Norway many years ago. For those who have never heard of it, it is a sweet, nutty brown cheese that is very thick. It's really good on a slice of bread!

I love to slice is almost see-through thin with a very sharp knife or cheese slicer and then let the piece melt on my tongue.

Ahhhh cheese heaven.
